What to do

Prepare for this spell by taking a few deep breaths and relaxing any areas of the body that feel tense. Next, spend a few moments thinking about feelings of protection and safety. You may like to imagine a time when you felt very safe and secure and try to recreate those feelings in your mind and heart. Alternatively, sit or stand with your feet on the ground and feel yourself connected to the security of the earth below.  

If you are using a bar soap, lightly inscribe a protection symbol onto its surface with the cocktail stick. The symbol could be a pentagram or just a simple circle. If you are using liquid soap, squirt a bit of the soap into the palm of your non-dominant hand and then use the pointer finger of your dominant hand to dip in the soap and draw the symbol onto the soap container.

Say the following words or create something yourself.

This soap now contains the power of protection

Each time I wash my hands, I am protected from all negativity and ill intentions.

Now wash your hands with the soap and say

I wash away all negativity and stagnant energy. I am now protected from all negative influences

You can repeat this phrase each time you use the soap or simply say the words I am now protected as you wash your hands.

Once you have finished rinse the soap bottle or ensure there are no traces or your symbol visible on the bar soap. The soap will continue to provide protection even though the signs have been washed away.

Magical teas for the broom closet witch

Making a magical tea is a simple way to add some magic to your life as a broom closet witch. You can use herbal teabags such as peppermint or chamomile or pick some mint leaves from a potted mint plant. You can also use lemon, orange or apple slices, honey, agave, cinnamon or cloves to add magic to your secret witch spell.

You can also add an intention to your tea ceremony. Think of something that you want to attract into your life, such as love or abundance, or something that you want to banish, such as a bad habit or negative feeling such as shame or guilt.

Place your teabag or ingredients in a cup, jug or small teapot. Boil some water and let it cool for a minute. Pour the water over the ingredients. While thinking of your intention, or stating it out loud, stir your tea three times clockwise to attract or three times anti-clockwise to banish. Alternatively, repeat an affirmation such as:

• I feel calm and in control
• I feel loved and loving
• I draw good things to me

Remove the teabag or strain your tea and sip it slowly while thinking about your intention or just taking a few deep breaths. Focus on the scent and taste of the tea. Notice the steam rising from the cup and the warmth of the cup in your hand. Try to stay focused on the act of drinking the tea and avoid getting caught up in thinking. If you do find your mind has wandered, don’t worry, just bring your attention back to sipping your tea.

If you do not like tea, you can do the same ritual with coffee or hot chocolate. You can also use the attracting and banishing magic method when stirring anything from soup to cake batter.

Secret witch glamour magic

Glamour magic is a type of spell that alters the way others perceive you. While you can use glamour magic to appear more glamorous, you can also use it to create any illusion. For example, you can do a glamour spell that makes you appear more confident and competent to others, or one that makes you unobtrusive so people are l less likely to bother you.

Using a glamour to be less obtrusive to others can give you extra protection when you are in the witches broom closet!

Spell: Enchanted lip balm

What you need for this spell

• A photograph of yourself when you were feeling whatever you want the spell to make you feel, such as attractive, confident, friendly and approachable, relaxed or unobtrusive
• A lip balm
• Any other items that helps you shift into the right mindset for your spell, such as perfume or aftershave, a certificate of achievement, a hoodie or sweater in a dark or nondescript colour.

What to do

• Prepare for the spell in your usual way such as by grounding or taking a few deep breaths.
• Spend some time looking at the photograph and recreating those positive feelings. Use your other items to imbue you with the feeling you are aiming for such as putting on the jumper and noticing how it makes you less noticeable, or looking at the certificate and basking in feelings of accomplishment.
• Once you are feeling as attractive, confident, approachable or as unobtrusive as you can, pick up the lip balm and visualise all those feelings pouring into it
• Say the following or similar words of your own

This lip balm is now empowered with a glamour

Each time I apply it to my lips

Others will perceive me as (insert intention) or others will barely perceive me

So may it be

I carry two lip balms that have been empowered in such a way with me at all times. The first is to appear confident and competent and the second is to help me become unobtrusive so that I can avoid being bothered.

You can use the same method to add a glamour to other items such as jewellery, perfume or clothes.

The witches broom closet magical home blessing

There are many ways to use subtle magic to promote good energies in your home. An easy way to do this is to incorporate magic into cleaning your home by enchanting your cleaning tools and supplies. The perfect incognito spell for the secret witch!

Spell for a magical cleaning spray

What you need for this spell

• A cleaning spray
• Salt
• Rose petals (optional)

What to do

Place the cleaning spray on your altar or on a plate or tray in your bathroom. Sprinkle some salt around the spray for protection. You may want to sprinkle some rose petals to create harmonious relationships within the home. Then say the following words or something of your own creation.

God and Goddess/Universal energy /preferred deities

I ask that you bless this cleaning spray, 

and imbue it with protection 

so that each time I clean my home

I am further protected from negativity and harmful influences.

Imbue it with tolerance and affection 

So that this home might be a harmonious one for all who dwell here.

Let it be so/Thank you

You can adapt this spell to bless a broom, dustpan and brush, cleaning cloths and even your vacuum cleaner so you can cleanse your home of negativity without anyone suspecting you are a broom closet witch. 

Then whenever you are cleaning, visualise all negativity being washed or swept away.

Magic outdoors

If you feel unsafe practising any magic in your home, you can do many practices in other locations. As a secret witch, you can easily create sigils in coffee shops or visit places in the city to cast spells or leave offerings. You can also use ordinary playing cards for divination. Don’t be discouraged by the limitations of keeping your practice secret, being creative can often lead to the most powerful magic of all.

You might like to keep some innocuous supplies with you wherever you go so you can access your magic whenever the opportunity arises. A crystal chip bracelet is inexpensive and not something most people will question. Other items of jewellery such as pendants and earrings can also include crystals or be charged with certain intentions making them perfect for the broom closet witch. You could even create a tiny travel altar.

Activity: Make a secret witch travel altar

What you need

• A small tin such as a peppermint tin or travel sweets tin. 
• Any items that you would like to include in your altar. (See below for ideas)
• A small cloth to stop the contents of the tin from rattling around. (You can also use this as an altar cloth)

Mine contains:

• Birthday candles in assorted colours 
• A piece of Blu Tak to fix the candles into
• A box of matches
• A small quartz crystal
• A small obsidian crystal
• A tiny plastic bottle of moon water (I use an empty vanilla extract bottle)
• A pentacle drawn on the inside lid of the tin for protection
• A tiny envelope of salt

You could include herbs that you often use and/or crystals, symbols, images and/or incense cones. If you plan on working outside then a LED candle can be useful as candles and wind don’t always collaborate.

You can hide your tin in the inner pocket of your handbag or the inside pocket of your coat. If you really want to dissuade people from nosing around, hide your tin in something people will never look in such as an empty tampon box. This secret altar can be a really powerful way to stay connected to your magical practices as a broom closet witch.
